i know... i know..

I've been neglecting you. But I'm in Toronto. The gravitational pull of the Centre of the Universe has been halting my updates. I leave you with only pictures... There will be something after the Leafs-Bruins game on Saturday though. Because i'll be there.

Think there's nowhere to go but up?

Think again.

The Canadiens continued their colossal meltdown, losing their fifth straight game to no other then powerhouse, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Well, no matter how bad it gets ... it could always be worse.

Eff

Toronto is beating Montreal 2-0. Good thing I'm 4 beers in.

Dear Ottawa #%$^$ Senators,

You've failed. You're driving me nuts. We gave you a simple task: to continue on your craptacular spiral into last place. And you couldn't even complete it.

Throwing-in-towel Fail.

Foligno, you're fired. Jason Spezza, definitely fired. Jarko Ruutu, fired. Alfredsson, so totally fired.

Ok, then there's the MATH FAIL.

Ottawa head coach Cory Clouston, who since taking over from fired Sens coach Craig Hartsburg Feb. 2 has a 13-6-3 record said: "We feel we're a playoff team."

epic math fail.

Oh, eff it. You're all fired. Someone call up the Binghamton Senators, i think they're the only ones up for the task. Or actually, you can borrow some of the Canadiens, they seem to be fairly good at NOT WINNING. Oh and fire Clouston and bring back Harsburg.

full of hateful, hateful, anger,
Jenn

Speaking of the Canadiens...

Hooray for meltdowns.

Remember when the Habs fired their coach and that was supposed to fix everything? That went really well.

PJ Stock had a rather endearing blog post about Carbonneau and the debacle that is the Canadiens dressing room right now.

The best part of it all.... This fantastically terrible meltdown season is going to be immortalized in a loonie.

oh yay. I can't wait to think about this season 15 years from now when i'm digging in my pocket for timmies money.

Moving on to more interesting things.

A Haligonian is coaching hockey on the international level.

Patrick MacDonald is coaching with hockey powerhouse, Malaysia.

This is the second year for the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia. The Chinese Taipei National Team won the inaugural tourney.

I am mystified by this. I heard the story of Patrick MacDonald on CBC Information Morning while still in a tired stupor at about 8:30 this morning. I actually thought I had dreamt it. Challenge Cup of Asia. Totally sounds fake.

Ovechkin.

Talk about blowing something out of proportion. The kid just scored 50 goals. Did you score 50 goals? Did anyone else score 50 goals? People are acting like he kicked a baby or something.

Wednesday, March 18, 2009

Dear Ottawa Senators,

I feel like I've been writing to you a lot lately. But you just don't seem to be listening. Is it me? What can I do? I'll change, I swear. Please, just hear me out...

I know your coach is saying "at this time of year it's real easy to throw in the towel, but you're not going to do that... blah blah blah, useless to win, but we're stupid like the leafs and are going to keep winning because we hate ourselves, our fans and most of all victor hedman.... "

But....

Do that.

Maybe you're confused about how to do it, having leaf-itis can do that to you. Let me help, it's simple:

1. Take towel.
2. Throw it in.
3. Please.

Cheers,
Jenn (and Canadiens fans, who realize the Habs need all the help they can get staying in a playoff spot).

Oh and...

Anytime a reporter can use "snazzy" in an article... well it's pretty much the best.

From Canadian Press:

"Carbonneau wore a snazzy grey suit and a big smile as he entered the room and joked that he was 'almost starting to miss you (reporters).'"

Don't me what the poets are doing.

Beware the drunken ramblings of an Irish kid on March 17.

It will happen.

We're going to 7am breakfast at a pub. And we won't be the only one.

Welcome to Halifax, where everyone joins in on irresponsible drinking habits!

There are 11 games tonight, including the epic showdown of Canadiens-Rangers. So i'll have lots of fodder that will seem completely genius to me by the time 11 p.m. rolls around.

See you later.

last year, 8am.

Saturday, March 14, 2009

well, at least someone in Montreal won.

It just wasn't the Canadiens.

But the fans, well they just witnessed history. Tonight, they saw hometown boy Martin Brodeur tie Patrick Roy, another Quebecois goaltender, for the all-time win record (551) — and they made sure he knew they appreciated it.

The only problem is, it's an all-time win record. Meaning Broduer had to beat the Canadiens. And he did. So far the coaching change is going real well, eh? One helluva lucky overtime win and two losses. Perfect.

The fans serenaded the Canadiens players with well-deserved boos in the final 30 seconds of play (it was out of hand at 3-1) but as soon as the buzzer went they began cheering ... for Brodeur.

Congrats Martin Broduer.

Hey, do you know who I am!!!

Listen, I'm all for stealing things away from the Centre of the Universe.

They get real uptight about stuff like that and it makes me laugh. I'm also all for making fun of the Centre of the Universe. Everyone's cracked a good ol' Teranna joke in their day. I mean, c'mon, they make it so damn easy.

Snow falls in this country, what? eight? nine months of the year? Nobody else called in the army. Just sayin'. And then summer finally arrives and the 24-hour news channels have their reporters out complaining about how damn hot it is ... meanwhile, it's about 5 degrees in Halifax and it's just rained for the past 27 days. Wicked guys, nobody cares about your "heat wave".

hmmm, what was my point?

Oh yah.

But after all the jokes, and all the disdain, I don't believe in stealing hockey things away from Toronto. Toronto needs all the hockey love they can get. I was once told by an old wise hockey man that apparently there's some form of hockey-god-karma for Toronto written into the hockey-god-bible in repayment for having the worst team ever. It's possible this old wise hockey man simply had too many Alexander Keiths, but who wants to take the chance...

Gary "sacrelig" Bettman, that's who.

The fans love the awards in Toronto. Every year there's tons of rowdy fans in the seats. It makes it fun. (I mean, seriously, how else will hockey fans in Toronto get to be in the same building as NHLers in JUNE. Low blow? sorry.)

But for at least the next three years the NHL Awards will be held in Las Vegas.

Yay?

I really can't see anyone getting too worked up for the NHL Awards in Vegas. In fact, I'm fairly certain the June 18 ceremony will probably bring out more people star-watching for Elisha Cuthbert, Hillary Duff and Carrie Underwood ... and Trish Stratus? Then the NHL players themselves.

The other question left dangling in my head, is what will happen to the hosting situation. Currently, it's Ron MacLean. I love Ron MacLean. It's my last taste of his puns before the long, long, hockey withdrawn, off-season. I just have this vision of the NHL trying to get a celebrity to host the thing. Like... Mike Myers............................................................

sorry, i was just thinking about what I just wrote.

Moving on.

Bad Life Choice, NHL. I picture many hockey player mug shots appearing June 19 in the media. You're putting the gun right in the hands of the children (or however that cliche goes...)

Vegas isn't for NHL hockey awards — it's for fear, loathing, drinking, losing all your money and getting hitched to some two-cent hooker you just met. I will start taking bets on which NHL player(s) this will happen to.

I'm picking Carey Price.

former teammates come back to bite.

Hmmm, actually "bite" is too soft a word... destroy? pillage? violently beat? kick? cudgel? (a new favourite word)

Anyways....

I really have no words to describe this game. It was like reverse pyschology. Usually it's everyone shows up except Carey Price. Tonight he was the only player who showed up, unless you count some former teammates who were playing in the blue and orange. A 3-2 overtime loss to literally the worst team in the league. Good job guys — good to see you're bringing it down the stretch.

Because I can't bear to think about this season anymore.

The obvious choice to distract myself from the math of the final 15 games of the season is to mull over... Who the Canadiens choose as their new coach in the off-season?

John Tortorella.

Quite frankly I think they missed the boat on this one, but you never know... the way they go through coaches/players in New York, he could be looking for a job come summertime.

Anyway, back to that missing the boat thing... Torts was hired by the New York Rangers (after spending most of the season despising 'the quiz' as an analyst on TSN) just a week before Gainey fired Guy Carbonneau. Torts is the ultimate distracter (not a word... hmm. oh well). His team is playing like a house league hockey team and he starts dropping f-bombs and making fun of the other team's coach. Suddenly every reporter gets amnesia, forgets the top scorer is not scoring and the team lost and starts debating whether Torts hates the media.

Just think of Torts swearing in a brand new language. Beautiful.

Marc Crawford.

is annoying us all each week on CBCs Hockey Night in Canada so he might as well annoy us from behind the Canadiens bench. He's won the Coach of the Year and a Stanley Cup with Colorado in 1996.

Patrick Roy.

......

.....

........

Okay, now that you've finished laughing. Think about it.

Roy has kissed and made up with his old team. (They retired his jersey this season and he gave a heartfelt speech at the ceremony).

But most importantly he has coaching experience, unlike a lot of retired NHLers who decide to jump right in as an NHL coach. Roy has been coach of the Quebec Rempart of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League since 2005 and led the team to a Memorial Cup in that same season.

He's had his fair share of run-ins with the media during his tenure with the Remparts, but that's Roy. He'd certainly force Carey Price to stop eating a bag of oreo cookies every night.

Jacques Lemaire.

Lemaire has been the coach of the Minnesota Wild since the team's creation in 2000. However right now the Wild are sitting in ninth — one point out of the playoffs. If the team fails to make it, or has a quick first-round exit. Lemaire might be out of a job. The 1994 and 2003 Coach of the Year had a short stint with the Canadiens in 1983-85 but I'm sure he'd jump at the chance to return to the team where he won eight Stanley Cups as a player.

His ability to communicate with players would be a plus. The minus, his trap-minded style might not be the best fit for the fast-skating, run and gun style fo the Canadiens.

Patt Quinn.

I've spoken to a few fans who've said they'd disown the Canadiens if they hired Quinn. But it's quite a possibility. The Canadiens need someone who can deal with the media.. Pat Quinn spent an eternity in the centre of the universe. What better training?

Craig Hartsburg.

Because coaching was the problem in Ottawa... clearly the problem was not the goaltending or the players. Both were stellar.

One of the other Sutter brothers.

Why not.

I'm sure there are several other coaches that will inevitably lose their jobs/are available currently. And it's fairly probably Bob Gainey will choose someone fairly whack. But whatever, i've been distracted from real problems (and schoolwork) for a good hour writing this.

Quote of the Night:

Carbo sent packing

I think there's something bigger happening within the Montreal Canadiens.

The announcement that General Manager Bob Gainey dismissed coach Guy Carbonneau came earlier this afternoon as I was heading out the door. I won't lie, it caught me off guard. But the more I thought about it, the more I realize it shouldn't have.

Coaching always crosses your mind when a team is not playing like it should. So it had crossed my mind when "partygate" broke. It seems to me that Carbonneau did not have control of his players.

It also crossed my mind when Kovalev was told by Bob Gainey (not coach Carbonneau) that he was staying home for that two-game roadtrip a few weeks ago. After the two-game hiatus Kovalev told reporters Gainey was the only one he talked to.

"I don't like to tell things to people or say how I feel," he said. "I'm not that open as a person.

"Bob is the only one I open up to and say how I feel."

I think there's more to this story than injured players, underachievement and a goaltender with no confidence. You don't drop your coach with 16 games left in the season if there's not something deeper going on. I don't think this is your standard "shake things up" firing.

To be a fly on the wall at the Montreal Canadiens team meetings.

Monday, March 9, 2009

Just so you know...

Oh. My. Hockey God.

Montreal fired Carbo. Don't have time to comment right now. Real post later.

Tight race in the East.

The Islanders are atop the standings — just barely. But they've won their last two games, whereas the Lightening who have equal amounts of games left are on a fantastic losing streak — they're really bringing it.

But the big story in this cluster-eff is the Atlanta "giant killers" Thrashers. They beat Montreal and then Calgary this past week.

They are seriously dropping the ball here. If the sport Extreme Ball Dropping existed, this would be it.

They're actually in danger of falling behind the Ottawa Senators, who have been shaky recently with two wins.

But despite the recent lack of determination by the Senators (and unluckily for the Thrashers), the Senators have two games at hand to completely get destroyed in. They also have two games left against Toronto — and the chances are good the Senators will prevail and lose both, since the Leafs are late-season choke artists, and always seem to win down the stretch.

Look out Atlanta, you're in dangerous territory here. You better get your act together.

R.I.P. MRS. HOCKEY

Colleen Howe 1933-2009

Unfortunate end.

Gary Roberts played a very anticlimactic final game in the NHL.

He was last in the lineup with the Tampa Bay Lightening on March 1 against Calgary (he got 1 assist). The Lightening placed Roberts on waivers previous to the March 4 NHL trade deadline.

However he was not picked off waivers by the time the trade deadline rolled by on Wednesday. And his $2million dollar contract has him squeezed out of Tampa Bay because of their salary cap situation.

Since breaking into the league in 1986 with the Calgary Flames Roberts became one of the fearless leaders in the NHL. A character "glue" guy, who would rather block a shot with his face then have it go in the net.

In recent years, his off-ice conditioning became legendary. players started noting that he was one of the fittest guys in the NHL (the guy was doing crazy mountain bike races in the off-season for fun!)

He even took on legendary status while playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Gaining almost cult status as fans (and media) began comparing him to Chuck Norris.

If you ask me, the Lightening effed this one up. They signed him in the off-season — they should have made sure they had room for him. This is no way to treat a veteran player. There's some cliche out there about karma being a bitch... yah.

If you ask me, Roberts is just another victim of the absolutely disastrous Tampa Bay management team.

Monkeys could manage a herd of cats better.

TSN is reporting that the Lightening will make an official announcement about Roberts' retirement today. Official or not — I think it's a sad end to a storied career.

And so, sadly, I leave you with some last What Would Gary Roberts Do's:

  • Gary Roberts does not shoot the puck. The puck seeks to escape Gary as fast as possible to the relative safety of the net.
  • Gary Roberts does not have a gym membership. The gym has a Gary Roberts membership.
  • Every day, Gary Roberts meditates for one hour. This is the only time the rest of the NHL can relax.
  • Georges Laraque named his fists Gary and Roberts.
  • The grass is always greener on the other side. That is, unless Gary Roberts has been on the other side. In that case, the grass is most likely the color of blood and tears.
  • Gary Roberts ordered a Big Mac at Burger King. And he got one.
  • What's known as UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, doesn't use it's full name, which happens to be "Ultimate Fighting Championship, Non-Gary-Roberts-Division."

Shakes head in dejection.

I was all ready to defend the lack of trade deadline movement by the Canadiens at around 6pm yesterday.

Deadline had passed and I had a few hours to absorb the day and I decided that Bob Gainey's move to pick up Mathieu Schneider a good tweak to fix the powerplay.

I had thought over what exactly the Canadiens would give up for players that they actually wanted to fit into the lineup.

The team does have a dynamic. If you send Chris Higgins away, which was a likely trade bait it's likely that Mike Komisarek would follow in the off-season. And Komisarek is a playoff performer. He's a checking and shot-blocking specialist. It's in the Canadiens interests to keep Komisarek. Bob Gainey said he likes his team.

So I was sitting there rationalizing things about team chemistry that only someone on the inside can truly know.

And then the Canadiens/Sabres game came on TSN.

And the Canadiens dominated the first period. They had 16 shots on net. Had some near misses.

And I almost started writing.

And then the goals started coming. 1... 2.... 3.... 4... oh did Carey Price realllllly just let that one in? .... sigh.... 5.

Not a good first "post-trade-deadline" game.

Did someone do a roll-call on the team plane when they arrived in Atlanta? Carbo looked so mad it's quite possible he may have murdered one of the players.

It's not panic time yet. And it's possible Gainey is right not to shake up the entire team (like the Rangers). But they definitely can't keep dropping games 5-1 to teams like the Buffalo Sabres.

TRADE DOOMSDAY QUASI-LIVE BLOG

Well that is it folks. I think the trades are done coming in. And I have mild carpel tunnel setting in.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:41 PM

"We know you got Olaf Kolzig, Jamie Heward, Andy Rogers and a fourth round draft pick in exchange for Richard Petiot. Can you explain that trade?" - James Duthie.

"no." - Brian Burke.

"Alright, Brian Burke, GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs." - James Duthie.

"..." - Brian Burke as his face cracks under the pressure of what appears to be a smile.

"BAHAHAH I KNEW I'D GET A SMILE OUT OF YOU." - James Duthie.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:40 PM

The TSN panel is wondering about the legality of the latest Toronto trade. You can't trade money. And that's essentially what's happening in this situation.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:30 PM

Some of the most effed up deals i can remember in a while. They kinda sound like those trades you used to see in the QMJHL back in the day. "Future considerations" anyone?
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:29 PM

Toronto is sending prospect Richard Petiot to Tampa for Olaf Kolzig (injured, going to retire), Jamie Heward (injured) and Andy Rogers (made of glass... first round draft pick in 2004 but has been floating the minors since) and a 4th round pick.

Apparently what this is... is Toronto essentially buying a draft pick off of Tampa. They're taking on about a half million bucks in salary from Tampa for players who are injured in return for that fourth round draft pick.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:28 PM

Completely off topic. A friend just sent me this.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:14 PM

Brian Burke doesn't like the idea of asking players to waive their no-trade clauses. That's fine. I think that it's part of the contract and it should be honoured. However, Brian Burke also just said that only "elite" players get these clauses. Toronto gives it out like candy on Hallowe'en. I assume this will change under Burke.... because he hates everyone.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:12 PM

haha that rhymes and it's true. I'm pretty much a genius. Like seriously I'm watching his presser right now. And he's basically saying that a month ago before he called out Antropov in the media, that there was "not a prayer" he would have gotten a second round pick for him. That's cold. You're a jerk.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:10 PM

Brian Burke is such a jerk.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:08 PM

From the interview though, it sounds like Cole is a little sad? Weird.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:05 PM

Ok, so. Carolina picked up Patrick O'Sullivan from the Kings for Justin Williams. Then Edmonton picked up O'Sullivan from Carolina for Erik Cole.

so Erik Cole is actually back in Carolina. Just like Gord Miller jokingly said like an hour ago. This is crazy. Is Gord Miller psychic? This is unreal. Good move for both sides. Erik Cole belonged in Carolina, he plays well with Eric Staal.

Erik Cole says he's "surprised"
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 5:04 PM

hahaha TSN is so bored they're trading commentators.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:59 PM

Ok... there's some sort of trade including Patrick O'Sullivan and possibly Eric Cole... Edmonton, Carolina and LA? I'm lost.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:54 PM

Ok, looking at that Wisniewski trade i'm left a little baffled. Wiz has been a fairly solid D-man for Chicago with 12 points and a good plus/minus... whereas Pahlsson (a forward) is -16 with 15 points. Wisniewski was a healthy scratch in early February, and there's been a few rumours that he's not getting along with coach Joel Quennville (similar rumours were flying about Brian Campbell) but it's not really an even move.

OH YAH.... PAHLSSON HAS MONO.

Thumbs down.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:51 PM

Yarg. NHL.com is imploding on itself.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:43 PM

Yup, James Wisniewski is heading from the Chicago Blackhawks to the Anaheim Ducks. Blackhawks are picking up Sami Pahlsson.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:40 PM

Kyle McLaren is heading the the Flyers. San Jose had a cap issue and had McLaren in the AHL. blockbuster. *rolls eyes*
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:38 PM

"ERIC COLE BACK TO CAROLINA!!!! no no! sorry guys. I was just joking. Sorry I got into Pierre's mixture there and got a little excited."
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:37 PM

Looks like Wiz is leaving Chicago.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:36 PM

"Have an opinion for once Pierre." - Duthie.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:33 PM

I just snorted water through my nose.

"I'm overwhelmed... with ... brain matter." - Pierre McGuire on the situation in Tampa Bay after Darren Dreger said that they were situating themselves for free agent season.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:32 PM

"How do you feel about being traded to New York Nik Antropov?"

Rough Translation (he does have an accent): "Well gee, i'm just damn excited to get out of this shitshow."

"No kidding."
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:28 PM

Shovel the driveway???
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:24 PM

The Canadiens recalled Marc Denis from the AHL. Halak is out with the flu. Looks like Price will get a chance to get his spot back.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:20 PM

Really?

What a let down. Sigh.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:17 PM
Live presser with Darryl Sutter in Calgary. He's wearing a plaid shirt. That kills me.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:12 PM

haha these guys are so sick of each other, they've been going since 8 a.m. and there's still NHL on TSN tonight. That's a long arse day. Duthie may just murder one of them before puck drop tonight.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:11 PM

Wins and Fails?

Montreal: Fail. They needed a centre, it was expected that after the Robert Lang injury that they would make some sort of trade.

Ottawa: Win. Pascal Leclaire might have fixed their ketchup goaltending problem...

Toronto: Tie? I guess? They traded for draft picks. Picked up Gerber? Gah?

 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:08 PM

Apparently Dominic Moore is traded. Maybe. Also Pocahontus Ponikarovsky is on the move?
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:04 PM

hello? NHL GMs? Did you forget what day it is? hello? Where are you?
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:03 PM

3PM EASTERN — deadline hits.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:00 PM

Pheonix Coyotes send Derek Morris to the Rangers.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 4:00 PM

Biggest non-story ever. Bouwmeester is sticking in Florida.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:59 PM

We're six minutes off of the deadline. But sometimes the trades don't leak until well after the deadline. Let's hope?
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:53 PM

News out of Toronto from Cory Worron. Apparently the Leafs are now trying to move Gerber? They just picked him up off waivers. Why would someone... give up something.... after they could have had him for nothing yesterday? Oh Toronto... so so so so silly.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:52 PM

Rangers are sending draft picks back to the Leafs. Moving Antropov is probably the absolute worst-kept secret. Brian Burke seems to hate euros more than Don Cherry and Antropov is unrestricted July 1 so he was getting the hell out of that shitshow called Toronto.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:51 PM

NIK ANTROPOV IS HEADING TO THE RANGERS. says Darren Dreger.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:47 PM

Looks like it's Dan Carcillo heading to the Flyers and Upshall is heading to Pheonix. Sucks for Upshall. going from playoffs and a damn good chance at a good run... to .... pheonix. yay?
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:46 PM

SCOTTIE UPSHALL HAS BEEN MOVED. says Gord Miller.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:44 PM

Meanwhile, Don Cherry and Alex Ovechkin are in a cat fight now.

"I am predicting somebody's going to get him, and somebody's going to get him good" - Don Cherry on Ovechkin's post-goal celebrations.

From the Toronto Star:

WASHINGTON – Alex Ovechkin laughed off Hockey Night in Canada analyst Don Cherry's criticism on Saturday night of his exuberant goal celebrations.

"He's a funny guy and old guy. He likes old-fashioned hockey," Ovechkin
said yesterday after scoring his NHL-high 46th goal in Washington's 6-2
loss to Florida. "He's not interesting to me, so he can say whatever he
wants. I don't care about him."

Said Capitals coach Bruce
Boudreau of his "idol" Cherry: "Even the smartest people in the world
are wrong sometimes, and I just thought he was wrong."

Seems like the media is jumping all over this. Although seriously I clearly remember Cherry saying the same thing about Jarmior Jagr. He also called Sidney Crosby a hot dog. When Crosby was like... 17? Cherry just likes to pick on the big stars to get attention. Good job media. You've given him exactly what he wants.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:41 PM

"Did the economy kill trade deadline?" - James Duthie.
Great. Just great. The economy killed journalism job prospects and now it's killing trade deadline too? waaaaaah.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:37 PM

Advertising win. I have the TSN live trade tracker open and noticed the ads along the bottom.
Does this not look like the Walmart happy face that's been shot in the side of the head? Well it forced me to click on it. It's for the Watchmen movie.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:33 PM

James Duthie just lost his mind on live television. He said something about his daughter. Lady Gaga. and Poker face. all in the same sentence.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:28 PM

I just spent the last five minutes looking for the TSN footage of John Tortorella from back when that sloppy seconds thing came about where Torts calls Avery an ass. I can't find it. That makes me sad. I'm gonna keep lookin.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:20 PM

Dutchie just called someone chunky trunks? I think he was calling Pierre McGuire that? haha. Can't handle this. I think the 50 TSN commentators they have in today are going loopy with the lack of moves.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:16 PM

TSN just showed footage of the New York Rangers practice. Tortorella and Avery united. Apparently Avery will be in the lineup for the next Rangers game.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:15 PM

Apparently the trade for Guerin is "conditional". There's something about the first-born child of Mario Lemieux.
 -Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:08 PM

Less than an hour to go. Time for the panic trades. Yay.
-Jenn Casey 3/4/09 3:06 PM

I do get real fired up when I hear those Molson commercials. They're always so right... there have been many times I wish I had left the sippy-cup lid on my beer. And i'm sure the dude in front of me wished even more.

Penguins sit in the final playoff spot in the East, 1 point ahead of Caroline Hurricanes (equal games played). Keith Jones just went on record to say that they WILL make the playoffs. I'm still unsure. It's close.

Bill Guerin to the Penguins.

Anyone want to make up some fake trades? Let's do it.

BAHAHA Ryan Rishaug in Edmonton. Fernando Pisani left he ice and then MacTavish left the ice. The reporters frantically made phone calls to find out that.... wait for it.... wait for it.....
practice is over.

Holy Wayne Gretzky... did I just say Megan Fox in my blog. You know it's a slow trade deadline when...

From Jay Onrait's liveblog: "Devin Wells just wrote in with some disturbing news: Megan Fox and
Brian Austin Green are apparently back together. I am officially
depressed."

Onrait was seen on TV earlier sporting a retro Geno Reda mug. That could be the source of your depression Jay....

Like Seriously!

Although I wonder how this guy feels. He's like a trade deadline hooker.

The
Bruins are stacking themselves for a playoff run. He's a good guy to
have in the dressing room. They look like the team to beat in the East
right now.

Mark Recchi to the Bruins.

Ok
so... So far I think that the Jokinen pickup by Calgary is going to be
good. BUT I think the most interesting to me is Ottawa picking up
Pascal Leclaire. They drop young gun Antoine Vermette, but I think it's
worth it. It will be interesting to see how Leclaire reacts to the
pressures of playing in Ottawa. Because let's face it, Columbus is not
a hockey mecca. But it does seem to work out well for both teams.
Leclaire is injured so Columbus is not losing anything this season and
for next season it can be assumed Steve Mason will be given permanent
#1 status. Also Toronto, as expected, picked up Martin Gerber off
waivers. After years of goaltending foibles in Ottawa, they could have
someone solid. If Leclaire can manage to play an entire season.

This
morning I sat in class wondering "why am I here in Radio Documentary
class attempting to keep track of the trade updates on my iPod touch?"
And then my iPod Touch's battery died. I cried a little.

It's
finally here. We're about 2 hours off of deadline time. There's already
been a few trades (Olli Jokinen being the biggest name so far, but the
Sens have been busy as well).

Happy Christmas Eve!

errr... TRADE DOOMSDAY EVE!

I'm so excited I can barely breathe. Or perhaps that's a result the soccer game I just played. Whatever. Doomsday is less than 24 hours away. I'll be updating (quasi-livebloggin) throughout the day.

See you then.
